About San Diego
San Diego's beach cities have become the poster children for the sunny, carefree, perma-vacation vibe for which Southern California is famous.
California's second largest city and the United States' seventh largest, San Diego County encompasses 18 cities and many other charming neighborhoods and communities, including downtown's historic Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad, Escondido, La Mesa, Hillcrest, Barrio Logan, Chula Vista and more.
Known for it's near-idyllic climate, 70 miles of pristine beaches and dazzling array of world-class family attractions, including the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Sea World San Diego and LEGOLAND California, San Diego offers a wide variety of things to see and do, appealing to guests from around the world.
In San Diego's East County, the terrain varies from gentle foothills to mile-high mountains and the historic mining town, Julian, down to the 600,000-acre Anza Borrego Desert State Park, offering nature-conscious visitors endless opportunities to hike, camp, fish, observe wildlife and much more. In San Diego's North County, the land produces quantities of flowers as well as quality grapes that become excellent wines, which are served at some of the most elegant restaurants and resorts in the region. Along the west, 70 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline not only supports year-round outdoor recreation, such as surfing, boating, sailing and swimming, but also important scientific research at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Mission Bay Park - one of the jewels of San Diego
Once a series of salt marshes, Mission Bay is a center for water recreation in San Diego. In 1944, civic leaders decided to dredge the marshy area to create the series of inlets, grassy knoll and beaches known as Mission Bay Park, 19 miles of sandy beaches.
The many coves, beaches and grassy areas that make up this vast aquatic park provide ideal spots for sailing, water-skiing, Frisbee tossing, softball, volleyball, picnicking, jogging and biking.
Nearby at Belmont Park board the restored Giant Dipper roller coaster and "The Plunge" indoor swimming pool as well as a collection of shops and restaurants.
Balboa Park - America's largest urban cultural park
Balboa Park is made up of more than 1000 acres and offers fifteen museums, various gardens, arts and international culture associations, as well as the San Diego Zoo, making it a place that offers something historical, horticultural, educational and recreational for everyone. Displays of internationally significant art treasures, exotic animal species, unique model railroads, world folk art, sports memorabilia and rare aircraft-to name a few-are on view in the Park's museums.
This urban park, just minutes away from downtown San Diego, is also renowned for its brilliant displays of seasonal flowers, shady groves of trees, and meandering paths through rolling lawns. Hike Florida Canyon's trails, visit the Carnivorous Plant Bog in the Botanical Building and watch the sparkling water dance in the many fountains in the Park.
Architectural note
Many of the museums along Balboa Park's Prado are housed in magnificent Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, originally constructed for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition. Discounted admissions to Balboa Park's major museums are available through the Passport to Balboa Park. The $30 Passport is valid for one week.
To the South is Mexico
Baja's Gold Coast cities are close enough to enjoy in a single day.
Tijuana
It's no wonder that Tijuana is one of the world's most visited border cities. What was once, by reputation, just beer, beads and burrito territory is now also known as a destination for shopping bargains. Folk art is a real steal.
Baja
Mexico's most popular visitor destination, Baja, is the longest peninsula in the world. It's 1,000 miles of uncrowded beaches, striking mountain ranges, diverse desert, historic cities and laid-back resorts. And the scenic drive from Tijuana to Ensenada is breathtaking.
